About
The Project
“Sounding the Philippines” is a digital resource exploring the cultural underpinnings of Filipino art music and stylized dance in the 20th century. The website features introductions to history, composers, and dance companies, as well as original essays, recordings of rarely-performed pieces, and resources for further research. The project was initially conceived of as an antidote to the lack of diverse representation in the North American music classroom, but has since expanded into explorations of national identity, agency within the post/colonial context, and musical hybridity. In other words, there are more stories to be told than just the music itself.
“Sounding the Philippines” would not be possible without the support of the Institute for Music Leadership at the Eastman School of Music and the Paul R. Judy Center for Innovation and Research. Special thanks to Christopher Tavernier and Zekai Liu for collaborating on this project. This project is ongoing, meaning that it will be updated as more research is conducted.
